Welcome 2026: Guides to London’s Iconic New Year’s Eve

Few cities in the world celebrate New Year’s Eve like London. On 31 December, the skies above the Thames erupt in colour as fireworks burst from the London Eye in sync with Big Ben’s midnight chimes.

The official viewing areas along the river are ticketed, with prices expected between £20 and £50 this year, but there are also excellent free vantage points such as Primrose Hill, Greenwich Park and Parliament Hill.

For backpackers, the key is planning. Tickets usually sell out quickly, with sales opening in October. Staying at London Backpackers Hendon gives you an affordable base with easy transport links.

From Hendon Central, you can be in central London within half an hour, join the celebrations, and then head back north to escape the late-night crowds.

Tips for celebrating:

Arrive early, as entry to viewing areas often closes by 10.30 pm.
Public transport is extremely busy after midnight, but some services are free.
Dress warmly and travel light – avoid carrying bulky bags.
