Notting Hill Carnival: A Colourful Caribbean Tradition in London

Every August Bank Holiday weekend (Sunday 24 & Monday 25 August 2025), the streets of W10 and W11 in west London explode in a celebration of Caribbean music, dance, food, and culture – drawing nearly 2 million travelers. The Carnival is one of Europe’s largest street festivals, free to attend (though the steel-pan competition on Saturday in Emslie Horniman Park requires a ticket).

- On Carnival weekend, many nearby stations will be exit-only or closed during peak periods. Plan to use slightly more distant stations like Paddington or Shepherd’s Bush and walk in.
Other tips:

Staying Safe & Sound
With huge crowds and occasional incidents, it’s worth being prepared:
Personal & Crowd Safety
- Carry minimal valuables – think hat, sunscreen, refillable water, emergency cash, phone. Leave jewellery, professional cameras, large backpacks at the hostel.
- Use a bumbag or crossbody bag; pockets in the front are best.
- Set a clear meeting point with your group – use local Tube stations (Paddington, Shepherd’s Bush) as reference.
Health & Amenities
- Stay hydrated: bring a refillable bottle you can top up at free water stations.
- Wear comfy shoes – parade routes span 3.5 miles.
- Pack wet wipes and hand-sanitiser for hygiene.
- Bring cash – most food stalls operate cash-only (£8‑ish per meal).
Transport & Crowd Control
- Plan exit routes early: underground stations are exit-only during peak times.
- Leave before evening; tensions and crowd crush risk increase after 6–7 pm.
- If you get separated, find a steward or police officer. Make identifying them part of your plan.
Tips & Insider Advice
- Try Jamaica jerk, Trinidadian roti, Guyanese pepper pot, and rum punch.
